History of Grama Panchayat

Social, Cultural and Historical Background

Krishnapuram, located at the southern end of Alappuzha District and adjoining the famous Ochira Parabrahma Temple, has a rich social, cultural, and historical legacy. The name “Krishnapuram” is believed to have originated from the presence of the renowned Sree Krishnaswamy Temple, meaning “the abode of Lord Krishna.” The region also served as the capital of the erstwhile Kayamkulam Kingdom.

Historically, the Kayamkulam Kingdom was annexed to Venad during the reign of Maharaja Marthanda Varma through the military campaigns led by Dalawa Ramayyan. The celebrated Krishnapuram Palace, the Sree Krishnaswamy Temple, and other remnants of the former kingdom continue to stand as symbols of this glorious past.

Krishnapuram played an important role in Kerala’s political history. Prominent leaders associated with the Travancore State Congress, the Indian National Congress, and the Communist movement were active in the region and contributed significantly to the freedom struggle and social reform movements.

Before the establishment of the Panchayat system, the area was administered through a Village Union, which functioned as a precursor to local self-government. Krishnapuram Panchayat was officially constituted in 1953, with Sri Kerala Varma serving as its first elected President.

Over the decades, the Panchayat witnessed steady growth in governance, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public services. Key milestones included the establishment of the Panchayat Office, Homoeopathic Hospital, Animal Husbandry facilities, Cultural Centre, Conference Hall, libraries, schools, and other public institutions. Development accelerated significantly after the Panchayat came under the Muthukulam Development Block in 1988.

Krishnapuram has also made remarkable contributions to Kerala’s cultural heritage. The renowned Ochira Parabrahmodaya Sangeetha Natana Sabha played a pivotal role in the evolution of Malayalam theatre. Eminent artists, playwrights, musicians, storytellers, and performers associated with Krishnapuram earned recognition throughout Kerala.

Among the distinguished cultural personalities from the region are Natya Kalakesari Ochira Sivaprasad Velukutty, renowned Thullal artist Kapil Raghavan Pillai, Harikatha exponent Krishnapuram Raghavan Pillai, musician Ochira Sankarankutty, and several award-winning literary, theatrical, and cultural figures.

The Panchayat also has a proud educational legacy. The CMS LP School at Kapil East, established in the late nineteenth century, was the first formal educational institution in the area. The Jayabharath Library, founded in 1950, remains one of the oldest libraries in the Panchayat. The Viswabharathi Model High School, established in 1982, marked a significant milestone in educational development.

The period from 1958 to 1972 was notable for labour and land-rights movements that shaped local social and economic relations. These struggles contributed to greater social awareness and improved rights for workers and agricultural labourers.

Today, Krishnapuram Grama Panchayat stands as a region with a proud historical legacy, vibrant cultural traditions, strong democratic institutions, and a continuing commitment to social justice, education, public welfare, and sustainable development.
